How Direct-to-Film Printing Works
If you're curious about how the DTF process works behind the scenes, here's a quick overview.
Once your artwork is finalized, our production team prepares the file using specialized RIP software that converts your design into a format optimized for DTF printing. The software also allows us to efficiently arrange multiple designs on a sheet of transfer film to maximize print space.
Your design is then printed directly onto a special transfer film using professional DTF printers. Immediately after printing, a fine adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink. Excess powder is removed, and the transfer moves through a curing process that prepares it for heat transfer.
After curing, the printed transfers are trimmed and prepared for application to the garment.
Using an industrial heat press, the design is transferred from the film onto the garment. After the film is peeled away, the design is pressed a second time to ensure a long-lasting and durable print.
The final result is a vibrant, durable design that works beautifully on a wide variety of garments.
Is DTF Printing Right for Your Project?
DTF printing works especially well for:
- Business shirts and branded apparel
- School spirit wear
- Team uniforms
- Event shirts
- Small custom runs
- Full-color designs with gradients
If you're unsure whether DTF, screen printing, or DTG is best for your project, our team will help you choose the option that delivers the best results.

Direct-to-Film (DTF) Printing FAQ
What is direct-to-film (DTF) printing?
Direct-to-film printing (DTF) is a custom apparel printing method where a design is printed onto a special transfer film and then heat-pressed onto a garment. It produces vibrant full-color prints and works well on many fabric types.
What fabrics can DTF printing be used on?
DTF printing works on a wide range of fabrics including cotton, polyester, cotton/poly blends, tri-blends, fleece, and many performance materials. This versatility is one of the reasons DTF is popular for custom apparel.
How durable are DTF prints?
DTF prints are designed to be long-lasting and durable. When properly applied and cared for, they hold up well through repeated washing and everyday wear while maintaining vibrant color and detail.
Is DTF printing better than screen printing?
DTF and screen printing each have advantages depending on the project. Screen printing is often best for very large orders with simple designs, while DTF printing is ideal for smaller orders, complex full-color artwork, gradients, and designs with many colors.
What is the minimum order for DTF printing?
DTF printing works well for both small and large orders. We can produce anything from a single custom garment to large batch orders, depending on your needs.
Can DTF print full-color designs?
Yes. DTF printing excels at full-color artwork including gradients, detailed illustrations, and photo-like images. Because the process is digital, there is no practical limit on the number of colors in your design.
How soft are DTF prints?
DTF prints have a soft, flexible feel on the garment. They are typically slightly thicker than direct-to-garment (DTG) prints, but remain comfortable and designed to move naturally with the fabric.
What file format should I submit for DTF printing?
Vector files such as AI, EPS, or PDF are ideal because they scale cleanly without losing quality. If you only have a PNG or JPG (or even just an idea), we can help prepare your artwork for printing.
How long does custom DTF printing take?
Turnaround time depends on order size, design complexity, and garment availability. In many cases, custom apparel can be completed within a few business days after artwork approval and garment selections are finalized.
How much does DTF printing cost?
Pricing depends on garment type, print size, and quantity. The fastest way to get accurate pricing is to request a free quote and share your artwork, quantities, and timeline.
Do you help with custom apparel design?
Yes. We offer free design assistance to help prepare your artwork for printing, whether you have a finished logo or a simple idea you want to turn into a print-ready design.
Can DTF printing be used on dark shirts?
Yes. DTF printing is a great option for dark garments because the transfer is applied to the fabric and can deliver bold, vibrant colors on both light and dark shirts.
Does DTF crack or peel?
When DTF transfers are produced and applied correctly, they are designed to be durable and resist cracking or peeling. Proper garment care and correct heat-press application help maximize longevity.
